31. SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING

31.Design Message

Rich countries need to support poor countries fairly in trade to reduce absolute poverty.

31. Design Aim

My clothes are about inclusivity in manufacturing as well as design. A women’s group in the East end of London made up my duplicate samples. I was able to meet who made my clothes, brief out, collect in person, see the work place and know that the hourly rate was fair.

Larger wealthy companies are in a position to take social responsibility for fair trade for the workers. This can lessen poverty and increase the effectiveness of local businesses in under developed countries. They are able to sustainably develop manufacturing in groups abroad and to ensure that they adhere to environmental regulations. Companies are able to guarantee that people in absolute poverty do not work in unsafe conditions, take on child labour or unfair wages.

The line is where we are randomly born. People do not choose to be born into poverty.
